Aphrodisias, which had close relations with Rome in the 1st century BC, was taken under protection by Octavian, who would later be named Augustus as the Roman Emperor, with the words "I chose this city for myself from all Asia." and started to develop rapidly after the Roman Senate granted privileges such as tax exemption and autonomy in 39 BC.
